Family Support

Helping children and families every step of the way

Our Family Support Workers (FSW) are trained professionals who provide impartial assistance to the school, parents, and most importantly, the children. They work to the needs of the school which can be throughout the full school year or term time only. Acting as a liaison between the school and parents/guardians, our FSWs are dedicated to fostering positive relationships and promoting the well-being of the entire school community.

How we support families

We are dedicated in fully supporting all children where needed. This may be behaviour, attendance, achievement but also more complex situations. Our Family Support Workers (FSWs) work in schools, homes, and neutral locations to resolve conflicts and provide assistance during and outside of term time. We believe that early intervention is essential in preventing further issues from escalating, and we prioritize understanding the needs of each child to provide the best support possible. Our FSWs also work closely with school teams to achieve resolutions when necessary.

Our Family Support Worker handles several important areas on a daily basis, such as...

  • Absence/ Lateness/ Truancy

  • Behaviour issues / anger management

  • Support around bereavement: people and pets

  • Parental alcohol and drug misuse / addictions 

  • Support around child contact for separated parents 

  • Bullying

  • Mental Health support

  • Anxiety/ stress

  • Eating - restrictive eating / over eating

  • Friendship difficulties 

  • Support & attend TAF and social care meetings

  • Parenting help and support 

  • Finances/ benefits and food bank referrals 

  • Housing and social care

  • School uniform

  • Signposting to other agencies 

  • Work closely with Elsa staff in school 

  • Mediate between separated families 

  • Social isolation

  • Attend school coffee mornings to offer support 

  • Support around domestic violence

How we support schools

Changing Lives Together fully understands that every school faces unique challenges, has set budgets, and follows their curriculum in order to run smoothly and efficiently. That's why we create customised service level agreements (SLAs) that caters to the specific needs and requirements of each school. Some schools prefer a single method approach with their own designated Family Support Worker (FSW). Although, it has been found that working with a cluster of schools is more manageable and beneficial, as this divides the costs amongst all schools involved.

Our FSW has been a wonderful addition to our school family. Her knowledge and skills working with families and signposting them, the support has been invaluable. She spends time each week phoning and meeting families but also working with pupils in a 'nurture' group style. She is helping school to develop policies and provides family updates for our half termly newsletter. We would be lost without this support.
